SKIN CARE BEFORE/AFTER PLASTIC SURGERY IN SUMMERTIME
So, it’s summertime. We know that it is fun to be outdoors, going to the beach, having a picnic in
the park, planning your summer vacation… But if you’re scheduled for plastic surgery soon,
it’s essential to adopt a special skincare routine for your entire body. Remember, your skin is your
largest organ, and caring for it should be about health, not just beauty. So check the tips we selected for
you and consider applying them to your routine starting today!
Before Surgery
- Cleanse: Make sure to remove dirt daily with a gentle, hydrating cleanser. Opt for a non-soap formula
tailored to your skin type.
- Exfoliation: Shed old, dead skin cells to make way for healthy ones. Exfoliate two to three times a
week, adjusting frequency based on your skin type.
- Moisturize: Hydrate your skin to support its barrier against dirt and dry weather. Stick to your current
skincare routine; drastic changes can stress your skin. Avoid over-moisturizing either, as it may not
provide additional benefits.
- Sunscreen: If you are venturing into the sun, protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Remember, even on
cloudy days, UV radiation can damage your skin and impair healing. Choose the highest protection this
time.
After Surgery
- Sun Protection: Continue minimizing sun exposure during the initial recovery period to prevent
hyperpigmentation and promote proper healing. If you must go outside, cover up with clothing, sunglasses,
and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher.
- Gentle Exfoliation: Some doctors consider very light exfoliation to address dark spots or dead skin
cells, excluding the scar area, only once a week.
- Moisturize: Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer unless your doctor recommends a specific blend. This
helps counteract dryness from summer heat and chlorine exposure, but avoid applying it directly to
incision sites.
- Avoid Swimming: While tempting, refrain from swimming in pools, oceans, lakes, rivers, or spas until you
receive medical clearance. Submerging incisions in water can increase the risk of infection and compromise
healing.
- Hydrate Yourself: Did you know that proper hydration could expedite healing? Ensure adequate fluid
intake to support bodily functions post-surgery. Stock up on non-alcoholic drinks and, of course, plenty
of good-quality water both before and after your procedure.
By following these pre- and post-surgery skincare tips, you’ll promote optimal healing while
maintaining the health and appearance of your skin throughout the summer months. Ready for your appointment?
*Don’t substitute these tips for a medical appointment if you need one. Always consult with your
doctor if you have any questions or concerns about specific skin conditions you may have.
